Oxo Good Grips Food Mill Reviews
It may cost a little more than others but it was definitely worth it. Then I drained the excess water in a colander and spooned about two cups in the mill. I ordered this mill because it seemed the most stable. It was the quickest and easiest way to make applesauce. I highly recommend this model. Chose the sieve with the largest holes or the result will be a puree. After looking at a number of recipes in various cookbooks and and on the internet, I was thoroughly confused, but I remembered that my mother-in-law owned a device that worked with little difficulty. After three to five minutes, I had a delicious sauce with very little effort and no skidding across the counter tops.
After each batch though, you just need to turn the mill upside down, run water through the hole and manually removed the leftover peel. A few seeds will be found in the mixture, but just spoon them out. After adding sugar and cinnamon to taste, I froze them in freezer containers. After washing the apples, I cooked them in in large pots (several batches) I did not core or peel any of them but tossed the apples in the boiling water and set the timer for 15 to 20 minutes.
I can push down on this while suspended over a pot, with no problems at all. The milling action works easily. It's easy to assemble and disassemble, and easy to clean. Until I get down to the skins-only stage of the milling, it requires only light pressure to mill the food. After using a Foley mill, this one was heavenly. Here's why:.
The minuses aren't minuses for me, so I'm still giving this 5 stars. There are a couple of minuses that others have mentioned:. I highly recommend it. I tend to want to mill those apple skins until they beg for mercy, because a lot of the flavor is there. Since you can put it over a much larger pot, it didn't bother me. I suppose if you were trying to measure the amount you'd done really accurately, this would be more annoying. There is no scraper wire underneath. I use it mostly for apple butter, and I find it to be really great.
The three screens are great, and I can get rid of my potato ricer now, as well as my old food mill. Since this makes it quieter, and all it requires it taking a spoon and scraping it once when you are done, this is a very small minus for me. The capacity of the mill itself is not large. I didn't really have a problem with that, since I would just spoon in some stuff, mill it, spoon in some more stuff, etc. The fold-out legs are really sturdy.
Well constructed, sturdy and easy to use and clean. is an excellent buy, a little more expensive than others but well worth the price. Oxo Good Grips Food Mill.
I bought this to replace another one I have used for a few years to make applesauce and tomato sauce. Oxo products are always excellent and this one is no exception. The legs fold up for compact storage but extend to form a study platform over a small bowl. It processes thoroughly with minimal effort. What an improvement.
I've only used it twice, once to make a concord grape pie and once to make apple sauce. I bought it after the harvest season was over. I might give it 5 stars after I have used it more, such as making mashed potatoes, grating cheese, making homemade jams, and canning tomatoe sauce, using the different inserts. It did all I wanted both times and is well made and reasonably priced. It's a bit small to do large quantities of apples, but then again it is easier to store.
