A Mango is a sweet, delicious fruit. It can be difficult to peel and slice, however. Traditionally cooks instruct people that the following steps should be followed to open a Mango - Cut off the stem of the mango; Hold the fruit upright, cupping it in the palm of your hand; With the other hand, use a potato peeler or a paring knife to cut away the peel, following the curves of the fruit; Lay the fruit on its flat end and slice lengthwise, working around the flat seed in the middle. If you have a mango-lover in the house, surprise them with this unique tool, as I did. Put this in the "someone had to think of it" category. Solid as other Good Grips products and purpose-built to do just one thing - pit a mango. OK, so if it was used more than ocassionally, it would get five stars.
Highly recommend it. I recently found a recipe that calls for cubed mango and this little item makes it so much easier to cut the fruit. Pop it in the dishwaher and you are good to go next time. Not hard to use at all. Just make sure you hold the fruit at the correct angle and push down slowly with the chopper. There isn't as much waste either.
To be able to cut a mango so that it's not a mess allows you to get the most out of the fruit, as well as saving you cleanup. Like any other fruit, mangos shouldn't be mushy but reasonably firm. Let the slicer guide you.
When I first saw this, I hesitated because I thought it was expensive for a simple slicer - but it was worth it. For those who had a problem, the secret is to use a ripe, not overripe mango. So far, every mango I used was sliced perfectly. The other secret is to read and follow the directions on the package as to where to place the slicer on the mango.
It doesn't slice directly down, but on a curve. I've had it for weeks and am a mango lover, so it got plenty of use.

I would not recommend buying this as I believe it would be a waste of money. Maybe its just me but I've never been able to split a mango using this tool, no matter the size of the mango.
