I spent months searching for a replacement but never found one even remotely similar. I really wanted to love this one too, but I don't. It mostly just mashes the cloves and leaves you a wad of pulp. I'll keep hunting.
My old enamel garlic press finally bit the dust. I loved it. I do like the self-cleaning feature, but I'd rather have a press like my old one. It's quite heavy and you have to have a vice-like grip to squeeze the cloves.
(I can barely squeeze it all the way, and I'm pretty strong). It was lightweight and easily minced the garlic through fairly large holes.
This press is heavy but durable and crushes cloves easily. This garlic press is the absolute best of the 3 or 4 garlic presses I have owned over the last decade or so. I plan to order one as a gift for my mom. Overall I would recommend this if you were purchasing a press. The cleaning mechanism is attached to the press which is good (you'll never misplace it). My only concern is that it may become detached from the press over time as it can stick a bit when cleaning skins from the press. I purchased this particular one based on a review in Cooks' Illustrated magazine.
My household loves garlic and cooking, particularly pasta and appetizers. Fresh garlic is almost as convenient as adding salt. Alternatively, the dishwasher works perfectly. The quantity of garlic is produces per clove is amazing, and clean up thoroughly in less than 10 secs under running water. This press really delivers.
I bought a couple more for christmas grabs. It produces finely minced garlic - no mush. This is so much better than the bargain priced press I was using. This is a sturdy and efficient garlic press.
